Opening Ceremonies

Moments like this are what the Charlie Campbell Memorial Tournament is all about.

Yesterday we were honoured to kick off the Annual Charlie Campbell Memorial Tournament with our opening ceremonies, celebrating Charlie’s memory with his family present and a rink full of people who continue to support this special event year after year.

Today gave us another reminder of just how meaningful this tournament truly is.

Meet Lainey Leblanc, playing for the Cheticamp U9 team. During today’s game here in Glace Bay, Lainey scored her very first goal of the season, and what better place for it to happen than at the Charlie Campbell Tournament!

To help celebrate the moment, she was presented with a Glace Bay Miners puck by GBMHA President James Edwards to commemorate her big milestone. A memory she’ll never forget.

Congratulations Lainey from all of your friends at GBMHA!

This tournament continues to bring our hockey community together through special memories, first goals, big smiles, and the spirit of the game all while honouring Charlie’s legacy.

Thank you to everyone who has supported the tournament so far. Keep the energy going and come down today to share in the memories and moments together.

GB Miners Hockey Hall of Fame Induction – This Sunday

Join us as we celebrate the newest members of the GB Miners Hockey Hall of Fame on Sunday, March 15th at 3:00 PM at the Miners Forum.

This year’s inductees represent the passion, history, and community that make hockey in Glace Bay so special:

Ricky Wrathall – Player Category

A talented forward with the Glace Bay Seniors, Ricky Wrathall was known for his scoring ability and love of the game. During the 1977–78 season, he set a local record by scoring three goals in just 21 seconds at only 16 years old. Tragically, Ricky passed away in 1983 at the age of 22 after collapsing on the bench during a game. Over four decades later, his legacy in Glace Bay hockey continues to be remembered and celebrated.

 Dave LeBlanc – Builder Category

Known to many as “the voice of the Cape Breton Eagles,” Dave LeBlanc has spent years helping tell the stories of hockey in our community and beyond. His passion and dedication to the game have made him a familiar and respected voice for fans across Cape Breton.

1972 Sydney–Glace Bay Metro Bees – Team Category

Captained by Stan MacDonald, the 1972 Metro Bees made history by capturing the Atlantic Canada Championship. Their incredible playoff run and team-first mentality cemented their place as one of the region’s most memorable teams.

We invite the community to come out and celebrate these outstanding inductees and the rich history of hockey in Glace Bay.

Congratulations to Ricky Wrathall, Dave LeBlanc, and the 1972 Metro Bees!

Late Glace Bay hockey player being memorialized in local hall of fame

Ricky Wrathall was a forward with the Glace Bay Seniors hockey team. During a game in 1983, he finished his shift on the ice and collapsed on the players’ bench. He was pronounced dead at the hospital a short time later. He was 22 years old.

Now, 43 years later, Wrathall is being inducted into the Glace Bay Minor Hockey Association’s hall of fame.

"We were devastated,” says Doris Bourgeois, Wrathall’s sister. “Ricky was our world. It was very tough. He was a special guy and hockey was a big part of his life. He was a very kind person and hockey was everything to him.”
