U18 AA Team Gives Back To Community

U18AA coach Darrell MacAulay and manager Kenny MacLean were talking about getting their team involved with our community. So they figured with Christmas coming up soon they would like to help out a few families the best way they could. With that being said they only had approximately five days to put something together. After their conversation they approached GBMH executive  and asked them if they would be approved for doing a block draw where they would sell 100 blocks at $10 apiece. The winner would receive $500 and we would have $500 to help out in the community somewhere .

Within five days all the kids had the block sold and they were able to do the draw and Valerie Burke, one of the players grandmother won the prize.
Next we were trying to figure out what was the quickest way to get the money that they raised into the community where it could be the best assistance to somebody.  After a conversation with James Edwards he suggested they look at Lisa Turnbull Roach’s Ovec Adopt a Family or John White’s Christmas Crew.  The team decided that they would split the money and help both groups. A representative from both groups were invited to meet the team and explain to the players where the money was being used and the good that the players were doing by helping out with this little fundraiser.

Darrell MacAulay says they are very appreciative of Glace Bay Minor Hockey allowing them to do this draw because it is a non-characteristic fundraiser and does not fall under the fundraising criteria for any team involved with the association, but with that said James Edwards approved it because they were donating 100% of the profits back to a good cause.

GBMH Covid Guidelines

Hello Glace Bay Minor Hockey Families,

As you are well aware, Covid cases in our province and within our region are growing at a fast rate. The NS Government just announced that Christmas Break has been extended for a second time and the last day of classes for students will be Friday, December 17, 2021. While there has been no further announcements from Hockey Nova Scotia we must continue to remain vigilant and use an abundance of caution when attending practices, games and hockey related activities. Good hand hygiene, physical distancing, and mask use need to be practiced at all times. Many of us are experiencing mask fatigue, but this is no time to let our guard down. Outbreaks start with one positive case and one positive case will have a huge impact on our association.

The following restrictions take effect on Friday, December 17, 2021

spectators are limited to 50 per cent of a facility’s capacity; spectator limits are also capped at a maximum of 150 people
a limit of 60 participants indoors and outdoors applies to sports practices, games, and regular league play; physical distancing is not required
tournaments are not allowed
children age 11 and younger continue to be restricted from entering Nova Scotia to participate in sports and are also restricted from participating in them outside Nova Scotia

MASKS

On the ice, masks are not required during practices, training sessions, and games. Off the ice, masks are required everywhere (especially in the dressing room). It is extremely important that you continue to wear your mask when you are not on the ice.

Please note that coaches and instructors who work with more than one group must wear a mask at all times while inside the facility (including while on the ice).

CLOSE CONTACTS

As a result of the recent outbreak in Nova Scotia, all close contacts of positive COVID-19 cases, including those who are fully-vaccinated, now need to isolate until they have a negative result from a lab-based (PCR) test. The lab test should be performed at least 72 hours after the exposure.

In a hockey context, if two teams play a game within 48 hours of a positive exposure involving a player or coach on either team (meaning a player or coach on one of the teams tests positive for COVID-19 within 48 hours of the game), both teams (as well as the officials) would be considered close contacts.

In addition to these restrictions; GBMH will initiate the following measures and reccommendations:

1. Team Christmas parties will be postponed until further notice (e.g. Novice Skating Party)

2. Games (Home and Away) against off island teams will be postponed until further notice.

3. Development Sessions - It is recommended to avoid mixing players from various teams.

4. Practices - As much as possible, limit the number of spectators attending practicing. Parents of players in U11 and older should drop the player off 15 minutes before practice and pick them up following the session.

5. Continue to complete the daily health check and do not attend a hockey related event if you are feeling unwell.

Please continue to check the GBMH Facebook and Web Pages!

HOCKEY NOVA SCOTIA UPDATE ON NEW PROVINCIAL RESTRICTIONS

With COVID-19 case numbers on the rise in Nova Scotia, the province announced today that restrictions on physical distancing and gathering limits are returning over the next few weeks.

Starting at 9 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 17, and lasting until at least the new year, the following restrictions impacting hockey will be in place:

  • spectators are limited to 50 per cent of a facility’s capacity; spectator limits are also capped at a maximum of 150 people
  • a limit of 60 participants indoors and outdoors applies to sports practices, games, and regular league play; physical distancing is not required
  • tournaments are not allowed
  • children age 11 and younger continue to be restricted from entering Nova Scotia to participate in sports and are also restricted from participating in them outside Nova Scotia

There are also new recommendations for close contacts of positive COVID-19 cases, including those who are fully-vaccinated. We detail those below.

REGULAR LEAGUE PLAY

We have clarified with Public Health that regular league play refers to the current league that your team is playing in. This includes provincial leagues.

We recognize this is not spelled out clearly on the Public Health website but we have worked with Public Health to determine that this is what they mean.

Due to increased testing and rising positive cases, we are aware that Public Health may be delayed when it comes to reaching out to close contacts. We have seen examples of hockey associations and teams being proactive and abundantly cautious in terms of pausing activities after potential exposures. We commend these groups for prioritizing the safety of their members and wider communities.

For more information on what to do if you are a close contact of a positive COVID-19 case, please click here.

If you have any questions about any of this or about a potential exposure, we encourage you to continue to follow the communication flow in the Rebound Plan 2.0.

To help curb the spread of COVID-19, Public Health is also strongly recommending regular rapid testing for all Nova Scotians. Learn more here.

Dr. Strang will be meeting with the sport sector tomorrow. We will take part in those discussions and will pass along any updates that come out of that meeting.

For now, please continue to be vigilant. It is vital that we do not become complacent. Please continue to wear your mask in the dressing room and everywhere else in the arena when you are not on the ice. Wash your hands often. Do not come to the rink if you are feeling unwell. Follow the Rebound Plan 2.0.
